TOUCHING THE CASE

We know so many things, but we don’t know ourselves!

For the first time the other day while listening to “Anatomy of a Murder,” I heard the expression “touching the case.” The host Anna-Sigga Nicolazzi used it in reference to individuals who are compelled to get close to a crime. The reasons are as varied as the people. But each time I hear talk of internet sleuths, or see complete strangers on crime shows talking about how a particular crime took over their lives, I get a bit itchy.

I am not one of those people who goes online and follows any of the novice crime solvers sites. But I’m also not a family member, or someone so incredibly close to the person that no one questions when they push for justice. But I’m an introspective person. I’m constantly asking myself “why are you doing this?” Yet I’m incredibly defensive if anyone else asks me that. If their tone is that it seems a bit obsessive. If they’re curious, that’s another story.
